Classes: The Power of Pencils

Bio Information: Libby Kyer has taken a life-long passion in drawing and focused on botanical art and illustration. Her award-winning artworks have been exhibited in regional, national and international shows. In addition, her works have been published nationally and internationally.

Her art is created in graphite, pen and ink, colored pencil and computer. She loves the complex detail and order in nature, rendering it to meet her love of color and design as well as science. Her art can be found in public, corporate and private collections.

When asked about her work, Libby responds: “After a career in the world of neonatal intensive care medicine, I took my love of drawing and science and focused on the botanical world. Graduating with the Award of Merit from the Denver Botanic Gardens Botanical Art & Illustration Certificate Program in 1996 and I have been an instructor with that program since 1999.

As a control freak, I find the demands of this art form satisfy my love of science and intricate detail. I believe humans are hard-wired to make order out of chaos. Finding the order in nature feeds my need to understand life in all its aspects. I work in colored pencil, graphite & carbon, water media, pen and ink and computer. Colored pencil is my favorite medium. It has pinpoint control and astounding color possibilities. Colored pencil is also very organic, the forms and texture growing out of the medium, layer by layer.”
