Class Name: Watercolor on Vellum
Educator: Carol Woodin
Length of Class: 3 days, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM days 1-2, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM day 3
Location: University of Denver High Altitude Observatory - Mt. Evans, CO
Primary Media: Watercolor and animal skin vellum*
Course Description: During this 3-day residence workshop Carol will demonstrate painting on vellum with watercolor. You won’t want to miss this wonderful opportunity to study with Carol. Working with watercolor on vellum is a unique combination. This technique is roughly the equivalent of watercolor drybrush, however the ground is animal skin vellum. Vellum does not absorb moisture the way watercolor papers do, and so the paint retains a luminosity that is unique to its surface.

You’ll “start at the beginning” learning how to handle watercolor application on this unique ground, then work on exercises to develop skills, proceeding to beginning a final painting. Carol will provide instruction in materials and methods, and lots of individual attention as you work to produce a finished plate. All specimens will be provided as will the vellum used. Participants should have basic skills in watercolor to get the most out of this class.

The workshop is limited to 15 participants. Two nights lodging and meals are provided. Each year the workshop fills up quickly so do plan ahead! We look forward to seeing you!
